Winner of the Newcomer Award at the 2021 Catey Awards
Barge East are delighted to announce that on Tuesday 7th September, we won the much-coveted Catey Award for Newcomer 2021. Won by some of the most prestigious names in the Hospitality industry and the equivalent to an Oscar in the restaurant world. Hosted by The Caterer, this award acknowledges the risks we have taken over the past 2.5 years to become the growing business that we are today, utilising our surrounding natural landscape and waterside East London location.

When we saw the opportunity to apply for the Best Newcomer Award, we wanted to showcase how proud we were of what we have achieved in the past 2 and a half challenging years, converting a 118 year old Dutch barge into a fine dining restaurant, as well as one of the largest and most beautiful riverside gardens in London, made up from the 37+ different types of produce that we grow on-site for our chefs to use across their dishes.
The judges were impressed by how we have survived the pandemic, making the best our of a bad situation while being innovative to keep our business afloat and grow into one of the most unique and current venues in London. Awarded for taking an unconventional route in the hospitality industry, one judge at the Catey Awards said "The winner and their team have shown awesome bravery, acumen and creativity literally getting this phenomenal project off the ground"
Aside from our stunning waterside location in Hackney Wick, East London, with breathtaking views of London's stunning skyline, Barge East currently offers 5 food offerings and 8 areas to book into between the restaurant and gardens. The produce that we use across our menus couldn't be fresher for customers, Head Chef, Stefano Camplone, sources the finest British produce from the highest quality local suppliers while developing our garden produce seasonally all year round for our chefs to be able to pick produce fresh, while offering our customers a farm to table service.
Reflecting on winning the Best Newcomer award, owner Tommo comments, “Opening a restaurant is undoubtedly the toughest challenge of my life to date, to have my risk and hard work recognised and rewarded means everything to me and my team".
Our staff are one of our biggest attributes to the company which is reflected through our ample positive reviews on Tripadvisor and additional online platforms, service is always with a smile and each member of staff embodies the ethos we have at Barge East.
